Energy Insights: National Cut Your Energy Cost Day

January 10th is National Cut Your Energy Cost Day and encourages people to look for ways to reduce energy consumption, and possibly save on their energy bills.  To celebrate, here are some energy-savings to apply at your home.

1. Lower your thermostats. Lower the thermostat to between 60 to 70 degrees. Lower it even further when you will be leaving your home for longer periods of time.

2. Programmable Thermostat. Consider switching out your current thermostat for a programmable one to help regulate the heating system in your home.

3. Change your Filters. A dirty filter will restrict the flow of air and that can cause your HVAC system to work overtime, which could create unnecessary cost to your monthly energy bills.

4. Turn off the Exhaust! Try to avoid using the exhaust fans when not necessary. Exhaust fans tend to be on the ceiling where most of the warmer air in your home rises to and can remove all the warm air from that room.

5. Add a humidifier. The air inside your home can become very dry. Moist air feels warmer and holds heat better, so a humidifier can help you feel more comfortable when your thermostat is set at a lower temperature.

6. Use Rugs on the Floor. Warm air tends to move closer to ceiling and doesn’t circulate much at floor level. Rugs can help insulate the floor and make walking a lot more comfortable.

7. Use Weather Stripping. Adding weather-stripping around doors and windows eliminates air leaks and can save you up to 10% in energy costs.

8. Bundle up! Use your thick comforters while sleeping so you can lower the thermostat at night.

9. Turn Down the WaterHeater. Set your water heater to normal (120 degrees Fahrenheit) to help reduce the amount of energy that is needed to heat the water for sinks and showers.

10. Efficient Window Coverings. Your home can lose up to 50% of its heating and cooling energy through the windows. Increase your home’s energy efficiency and your family’s comfort by using energy-efficient window coverings.
