5 Things You Can Do This Earth Day to Help the Planet and Save Energy

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970 and includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.

On Earth Day, we can take the time to reflect on how our daily actions and habits affect the planet. Making a few changes can help the planet, make your home more energy-efficient, and possibly save on your energy bill! Wondering where to begin in doing your part? Here are 5 tips to get you started:

 Lightbulbs: Switch to LED

According to the research firm IHS Markit, LED bulbs prevented more than 500 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere in 2017. It's easy to see how switching can help the planet! ENERGY STAR® certified LED bulbs use up to 90 percent less energy and can last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, also making you more energy-efficient at home.

 Water: Use Less, Save More

Use a water filter for your household drinking water and use reusable water bottles instead of plastic. Also, check for water leaks in your home. According to the EPA, the average home leaks over 10,000 gallons of water yearly. To learn more about water leaks and how to repair them visit: Fix A Leak.

Bonus Tip: Installing low-flow showerheads with the WaterSense Label could save the average family 2,700 gallons of water a year.

 Windows: Utilize Your Blinds

Please don't underestimate the power of blinds, curtains, and other window treatments when regulating your home's temperature. While it's nice to have some privacy, it's even nicer to have some help keeping your home at the temperature you prefer and not rely solely on your HVAC system, saving energy and helping the environment. Curtains, blinds, and window treatments can help your home stay at a more comfortable temperature in any season.

 Plants: Bring Nature Indoors

Houseplants, smart gardens, micro greens, and even cat grass can bring some nature indoors. This can be a huge boost if you work indoors at a computer or are otherwise separated from nature regularly. Herb gardens take up little space, require minimal work, make a nice contribution to cleaner air in your home, and are handy for cooking.
