Be Prepared When The Power Goes Out

There is nothing like a good old-fashioned power outage to remind you how amazing it is to have light and A/C at our beck-and-call just by flipping a switch or dialing a thermostat! Those are modern conveniences we should never take for granted, and that lesson tends to be driven home the hard way when the power goes out.

What is a power outage?

A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly and can be caused by many different reasons like severe weather or a grid malfunction.

A power outage may:

  • Disrupt communications, water, and transportation.

  • Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, and other services

  • Cause food spoilage and water contamination.

  • Prevent use of medical devices.

So how should you prepare for a power outage? There’s a lot you can do to make these inevitable interruptions much more bearable.  The Wire is bringing you tips on how to prepare in advance, protect yourself during, and how to stay safe after the power outage.

As the power comes back on make sure to stay safe with these tips from Ready.gov:

  • When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees of higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color, or texture.

  • If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated, unless the drug’s label says otherwise.

Chances are, you will experience a few power outages in your lifetime.  Staying aware and being prepared can make the lights going out a lot less inconvenient for you and your family.
