Vacation-Ready: How to Save Energy While You’re Away

A vacation should mean less stress and not higher energy cost while you are away. Taking time to prep your home can save energy and worry while you’re away.

The truth is, many homes keep using energy even when no one’s there. Electronics draw phantom power, heating and cooling systems keep running, and lights or appliances may stay on longer than needed.

The good news? A few quick steps before you leave can prep your home the smart way. Set it, forget it, and enjoy your trip.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Heating and cooling account for the largest share of home energy use, so this is where you’ll save the most.

  • Set the heat to 55–60°F/ 13–16°C in cooler months.

  • Set AC to 78–82°F/ 26-28°C in warmer months

  • Use vacation mode or a programmable/smart thermostat if available.

Unplug Energy Vampires

Many devices still use electricity when turned off.

Before leaving, unplug:

  • TVs and streaming devices

  • Coffee makers

  • Gaming systems

  • Chargers and small appliances

  • Office equipment

Pro Tip: Use power strips so you can switch everything off at once.

Turn Off and Time Your Lights

Leaving lights on all week wastes energy.

  • Turn off all indoor lights.

  • Use timers for one or two lamps for security.

  • Use motion sensors for outdoor lighting.

This keeps your home looking occupied without unnecessary usage.

Adjust Water Use

Prevent wasted energy and water while you’re gone.

  • Turn your water heater to vacation/low mode.

  • Fix dripping faucets

  • Consider shutting off the main water supply for longer trips.

Prep Your Kitchen

A little kitchen prep can prevent energy waste and food spoilage.

  • Toss perishables

  • Empty the ice maker if you will be gone for an extended period.

  • Set fridge/freezer to recommended temps (not extra cold)

  • Run the dishwasher and take out the trash before leaving.

A fuller fridge actually runs more efficiently, so avoid leaving it nearly empty.

Travel Smarter, Too

Energy savings don’t stop at home.

  • Carpool or combine trips

  • Pack lighter to improve fuel efficiency.

  • Bring reusable bottles, bags, and containers.

Small habits add up — even on vacation.
