Summer Safety: How to Keep Your Family Safe Outside This Season

Summer is a time for sunshine, barbecues, and making memories with your loved ones, but it’s also when safety should be at the top of your mind. With longer days and more time spent outdoors, the risks of sunburn, dehydration, and accidents can rise. Here are some simple yet effective tips to help you keep your family safe while enjoying all the fun that summer has to offer.

1. Stay Sun Smart

Sunburn isn’t just uncomfortable—it can also increase the risk of skin cancer. Protect your family by:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours.

  • Wearing hats, sunglasses, and lightweight long-sleeve shirts for added protection.

  • Seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

With higher temperatures, the body loses more fluids. Keep everyone hydrated by:

  • Carrying reusable water bottles everywhere.

  • Offering water frequently, especially to kids who may not ask.

  • Limiting sugary or caffeinated drinks that can lead to dehydration.

3. Watch for Heat-Related Illness

Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, or confusion. If you or a loved one feels unwell, get to a cool area, hydrate, and rest.

4. Bug Off

Mosquitoes and ticks love summer, too. Protect your family by:

  • Use insect repellent with DEET or natural alternatives like lemon eucalyptus oil.

  • Checking everyone for ticks after hikes or grassy outings.

  •  Avoid standing water where mosquitoes breed.

5. Pool and Water Safety

Water safety is non-negotiable whether it’s the pool, beach, or lake.

  • Always supervise children closely when they’re in or near water.

  • Teach kids how to swim and practice safe behaviors.

  • Use life jackets for young children or non-swimmers when boating or at the lake.

6. Playground Precautions

Outdoor play is essential for kids—but so is safety.

  • Check equipment for hot surfaces that can cause burns.

  • Ensure the area has a soft ground cover (like mulch or rubber).

  • Watch for sharp edges or broken parts on older playgrounds.

7. Outdoor Cooking and Fire Safety

Grilling is a summer favorite, but it comes with fire risks.

  • Keep grills away from flammable materials, and never leave them unattended.

  • Use long-handled tools and flame-resistant mitts.

  • Keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
