Back to School, Back to Energy-Saving: 5 Easy Tips for a Smarter Home

As summer winds down and the school year kicks off, families everywhere are shifting gears. Between packing lunches, checking homework, and running to activities, energy efficiency might not be top of mind, but it should be. With kids back in school and routines resetting, it’s the perfect time to rethink how your home uses energy.

Here are some smart, simple ways to save energy during the back-to-school season:

1. Set It and Forget It

With fewer people at home during the day, your HVAC system doesn’t need to work as hard. Program your thermostat to adjust automatically:

  • Set it a few degrees higher when everyone is away.

  • Cool things down about 30 minutes before the first person gets home.

Bonus tip: A smart thermostat can learn your family’s routine and adjust itself, saving energy while keeping you comfortable.

2. Unplug the Energy Vampires

Laptops, chargers, game consoles, and TVs all draw power even when they’re not in use. With school schedules back in swing, many of these devices get less use during the day.

  • Unplug what’s not in use.

  • Use power strips or smart power strips to turn off multiple devices simultaneously.

  • Teach kids to power down electronics when they’re done (great for energy savings and responsibility).

3. Shift Laundry & Dishwashing to Off-Peak Hours

Now that mornings and evenings are more structured plan energy-heavy chores like laundry and dishes for off-peak hours.

  • Wash full loads only.

  • Use cold water when possible.

  • Let dishes air-dry instead of using the heat cycle.

 4. Make Lunch Smarter (and Cooler)

Back-to-school also means back-to-lunch prep! If you’re using the oven or stove in the morning, it adds heat to your home, which makes your A/C work harder.

  • Try no-cook or toaster-friendly lunches. Bonus: Faster mornings.

  • Use insulated lunch bags to keep food cool without relying too heavily on the fridge or freezer.

5. Maximize Natural Light

Mornings and early evenings often bring cooler temps and plenty of light.

  • Open blinds instead of turning on lights.

  • Let in fresh air when it’s cool outside and turn off fans or A/C.

  • Keep furniture clear of vents and windows for better airflow and natural brightness.

Bonus: Make It a Family Goal

Challenge your family to reduce energy use together. Getting kids involved not only saves energy but also teaches them lifelong habits.
