7 New Year’s Resolutions for Saving Energy

Many people make New Year’s resolutions at the start of each year. For example, we’ve all made resolutions to go to the gym more or eat out less. But unfortunately, many of those goals fall short. Thankfully, some resolutions that are easy to stick to can also save energy and help decrease your monthly energy bill.

Upgrade to Energy Efficient Bulbs

LED technology is advancing rapidly. Today’s LED bulbs use about 80% less energy than traditional ones. Place LED light bulbs in the five light fixtures you use the most, and you will start to see a drop in your energy usage every month. This is one of the easiest energy efficiency tips to follow since it simply involves changing the light bulbs in your home.

Use More Power Strips

Even when appliances aren’t turned on or used, they still use power when plugged in. So instead of unplugging things all the time, invest in a power strip that you can plug multiple items into and turn off all at once.

Wash Full Loads of Laundry

No matter how full your washer is with laundry, it uses the same amount of energy. Approximately 10% of a home’s energy use is dedicated to washing and drying clothes. Washing larger loads allows you to take advantage of the energy you’re already going to use. Instead of tossing in a t-shirt or two, wait until your laundry piles up for the most energy efficient wash.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

With a programmable thermostat, you can save energy by setting your heat or air conditioning to run only when needed.

Take Shorter Showers

One of the easiest ways to save energy at home is by taking shorter showers! The average shower lasts around 8-10 minutes and uses roughly 16-18 gallons of water – about 25% of our individual water usage.

Invest in Energy Efficient Appliances

As a homeowner, energy-efficient appliances help you save money and energy. These appliances vary from LED light bulbs, refrigerators, smart thermostats, and even washers and dryers. While the upfront cost of energy-efficient appliances may be higher than non-efficient appliances, the cost savings are well worth it. Significantly Energy Star appliances save you 10 – 50% more energy depending on the model and can be even more if replacing an old machine.

Change Your Filter

Change the filter regularly. Check your filter every month and change it if it’s dirty. A dirty filter will slow air flow and make your AC/Heating system work much harder, wasting energy.
