6 Benefits of Smart Power Strips

Modern technology has embedded itself into every aspect of our daily life nowadays. As a result, our electronics have become increasingly complicated, with different versions hitting the market every day, from Wi-Fi-equipped TVs and virtual reality gaming systems to Bluetooth speakers and robot vacuums. You've probably enlisted the services of a power strip to help power all your devices due to the numerous cords and few outlets in your home, but have you tried a smart power strip? And what benefits do they provide?

What is a Smart Power Strip?

Smart power strips resemble ordinary power strips and govern power flow to devices in the same way. The difference is that you can control each outlet and the gadgets plugged into it using your phone or smart hub. Some can detect when a device is in standby mode and will cut off all power to that device, saving energy that would have been used necessarily.

How do Smart Power Strips Work?

There are many different types of smart power strips on the market. Some smart power strips will assess your electricity usage and automatically disable things that are not required at the moment. For example, if you turn off the TV, a smart strip will switch off power to game consoles, cable boxes, home theater components, DVD players, and anything else connected to your TV screen.

Other smart power strips have what's known as an infrared remote (IR) sensor to detect motion in the room. Situations where you fall asleep watching TV or leave a room without powering down your gaming system, are examples of when this IR sensor comes in handy. When no motion is detected for a set amount of time, this smart power strip automatically shuts off idle electronics and their supporting devices.

Note: Smart power strips and smart plugs aren't quite the same! Smart plugs implement the same technology but only power a single outlet. Smart power strips have multiple smart plugs so that you can power multiple devices individually through only one outlet.

Benefits of Smart Power Strips:

  • Turn off unused devices automatically. It is hard to remember to unplug devices, and it's inconvenient. By automating this task, smart power strip energy savings are easy.

  • Limit your electricity expenses. Energy-saving power strips stop devices from wasting electricity as they continue to draw power even when turned off.

  • Enhance home security. You can use a smart power strip to turn on your lights and television when you are not at home. Giving the impression that your house is occupied will deter criminals.

  • Extend the life of devices. Constantly consuming power causes wear and tear on device components. Disconnecting them from power helps them last longer.

  • Controlling devices is convenient. Programming, automatic sensors, and controlling through phones and voice assistants all make managing how your devices operate effortlessly.

  • Protect against power surges. Like regular power strips, smart power strips protect sensitive devices from dangerous changes in current, such as those that can happen during a storm, brownout, or blackout.
