Saltwater, Sand, & Safety; Family Beach Safety Tips

The sun, the sand, and the ocean are key ingredients to a perfect summer day.  Every summer millions of us pack the flip flops and sunscreen and head to the beach.  May is National Water Safety Month and The Wire is bringing you tips on how to stay safe and have a blast at the beach!

  1. Keep children within arm’s reach. On the beach and in the water.

  2. Knee Deep is too Deep! Strong winds, waves and currents create dangerous rip currents that can sweep a person out to sea.

  3. Feet First- don’t dive headfirst! Check for depth and obstructions and go in feet first.

  4. Know and obey your flags. Learn the meaning of the beach flags.

  5. Keep a lookout for aquatic life. Water plants and animals may be dangerous. Avoid patches of plants. Leave animals alone.

  6. Swim near a lifeguard. Swim only at lifeguard protected beaches within designated swimming areas.

  7. Wear a life jacket. Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets in and the around water.

  8. Swim with a buddy. Never swim in the ocean alone.
