6 Ways to Spring into Being Energy-Efficient

Spring is here and so is the season for cleaning! We know it’s not what everyone wants to be doing while the weather is finally starting to warm up, but it could help you save! So how big is your spring-cleaning list this year? Does it include items that could help you save on energy? This spring start adding to-dos that could lower your energy usage and possibly save you money on your energy bill. We have a few helpful Do-It-Yourself cleaning tasks that could help you to get started.

-          After dusting all the ceiling fans in your house. Don’t forget to change the direction of the air flow. When you switch the direction and draw air upward, you’re helping to cool the room.

-          Check the home for air leaks. Air leaks can be found in the foundation, which can include basements or crawlspaces. If you see a spider web, then that is a sign that there is most likely a draft.

-          Is there a sliding door in your home? If so, don’t overlook the track. Keeping the track clean can ensure that the door’s seal will remain intact, and it will prevent gaps where heat or cold air can escape.

-          Spring means lawn care is just around the corner. If you have the option, invest in an electric-powered lawn mower than won’t emit greenhouse gases like the gas-powered mowers do.

-          Check the seals and coils of your fridge to make sure both are clean. If the seal is dirty this could cause your fridge door not to close properly. If the coils are dusty and dirty, it means your motor is likely to be working harder while using more electricity.

-          Last but certainly not least. If you’re in the market for a new appliance, double check to make sure it has an ENERGY STAR® label on it.

Once you knock those out of the way, go enjoy the warmer weather and enjoy knowing that you could be saving on your next energy bill just by cleaning!
